While 2009 may be drawing to a close, December has certainly been as busy as ever for Space Energy with our team attending a number of high profile conferences and significant international events, including hosting royalty in Dubai!  As our regular readers will know, this year has seen tremendous progress for Space Energy on almost every front, and we would like to thank every one of you for your interest, encouragement and support this year. It is an understatement to say we are looking forward with much anticipation to 2010.

We would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and very Happy New Year!

Space Energy Hosts Royalty in Dubai

Her Royal Highness the Princess of Hanover, Princess Caroline of Monaco, and Her Majesty Queen Silvia of the Buganda Kingdom of Africa recently completed an official tour of Dubai, which was coordinated and hosted by Space Energy’s Board Member and Senior Vice President of Business Development, Mr Fadi Khoury.  Space Energy’s principals, Stephan Tennsel and Peter Sage, were there to support Mr. Khoury’s hospitality mission, along with Eileen Meehan, and attended two other events with both Queen Silvia and The Princess. The royal events were held over a three day period during the official visit, incorporating meetings with many senior officials, Sheikhs and prominent members of society.

As President of the children’s charity, AMADE Mondiale, Princess Caroline was promoting the international rights of children and raising global awareness of critical issues that overwhelmingly affect youth.  She was both intrigued and fascinated with the vision of Space Energy, and the implications of SBSP as an integral component of the world’s future energy sources.   This was echoed by Queen Silvia, who immediately grasped the enormous benefits that an energy source such as SBSP could bring and how it would directly benefit and enhance the lives of millions of people, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.

3rd Annual CleanTech Forum in Beijing

Earlier this month, Space Energy travelled to Beijing, China, to attend the 3rd annual CleanTech Forum. Space Energy is a valued member of CleanTech, and plans to attend and speak at the upcoming forums in both San Francisco and Paris.

China has been quickly emerging as a leader in the Green Movement, and is now renowned for possessing the largest cleantech market in the world. The CleanTech forum in Beijing aimed to examine and expose the well publicised advancements of China’s energy market, scrutinize the latest developments in the climate change debate and develop innovative ways to connect emerging clean technologies.  Participants and speakers alike actively utilized the forum to attempt to harness China’s success, and to work towards a collective future as major players in the CleanTech industry.

The Space Show Invites Space Energy to Talk Business

Last week saw one of Space Energy’s principals and co-founders, Peter Sage, interviewed on the highly popular ‘Space Show’.  This international radio show, hosted by 'The Larry King' of Space, Dr. David Livingston, discusses, among other things, the important issues influencing the development of space commerce and space tourism.

On the show, Peter discussed in detail the various aspects of the business case for SBSP and why having a solid commercial foundation was the key to making any venture a success.   He then answered a range of different questions from space enthusiasts across the US who seemed to enjoy the opportunity of having an entrepreneur’s perspective.  This show has already been labelled as ‘Do Not Miss’ and has now been uploaded to the Space Show’s website.   To read the review or listen to the interview in its entirety, click here.

INDUSTRY NEWS

California Regulators OK PG&E Contract For Space-Based Solar Power

In an important decision that is another legitimizing milestone for the SBSP community, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has recently sanctioned the large state utility firm, PG&E, to purchase energy supplied by Space Based Solar Power from the Solaren Corporation. (Click here to see the government resolution).

PG&E wouldn't disclose the cost of the proposed 15-year contract, but said it would be ‘above-market’, more than 12.9 cents a kilowatt-hour, according to documents filed with the California Public Utilities Commission.

PG&E and other California utilities are required to use renewable sources for a fifth of the power they sell by 2010, ramping up to one-third of their retail power by 2020. The requirements are part of the state's 2006 plan to combat climate change.  To read more on the story, click here.

Price for Solar Desert Project tops half a Trillion Dollars

A resourceful plan to generate solar energy in the Sahara, drawing on investments of more than $570bn, endeavours to supply Europe with 15% of its total energy needs by 2050. The plan announced by the Desertec Foundation, started by Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan, aims to harness concentrated solar power (CSP) from massive mirror-like structures to produce up to 550 gigawatts of electricity over the next 40 years.  Installations will initially be located in the northern Sahara desert before advancing to other Middle Eastern deserts. COST COMPARISON

When looking at the cost of building and launching an SBSP system, most people think the established cost of $16-$20 billion dollars for the first GW satellite seems high, (although further investigation will point to a close comparison with nuclear when full cost accounting is taken into account.)  Some also think that energy contracts in the region of $200B are too large to be negotiated. However, as in all cases, once proper perspective is used, it becomes a much more realistic prospect. In a $2 trillion a year market, an investment of $570B for a 40 year solar project is not only feasible but, as in this case, a reality.  A $570B investment in SBSP over the same period would produce a global network of satellites generating hundreds of Gigawatts of constant, reliable, inexhaustible clean energy with a far higher return on investment, both in profitability and global benefit.

Obama makes a bold statement in pushing for U.S. energy leadership

U.S. President Barack Obama highlighted the importance of the US becoming the world leader in new energy technology in a speech at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The speech was also a platform to press for passage of comprehensive energy legislation to make renewable energy profitable. He has echoed these sentiments numerous times, most recently at the Cop 15 conference where he stated: “We can either remain the world’s leading importer of oil, or we can become the world’s leading exporter of clean energy technology” -  Read more here.

Beijing seeks a head start in the race to go green

A Chinese task force, comprising of local and international experts from a wide variety of sources, has devised a low carbon outline to be included in China’s 12th five-year plan. The goal is to guide China towards a low-carbon economy by utilizing new technologies and introducing energy saving measures and new energy sources.

China strives to be a leading provider of clean technologies and believes the key lies in a localizing approach to global technologies – they envision “adapting existing technologies to Chinese conditions”. Read more here.

Copenhagen Climate Change Conference 2009

SunTech Power to Open Plant in Arizona

China’s largest solar panel manufacturer, Suntech Power, announced plans earlier this month to open its first American plant near Phoenix.  Suntech had been publicly considering a manufacturing site in the United States for several years, said Mr Roger Efird, Managing Director of Suntech. Although the cost of the plant was not divulged, it was confirmed that Suntech has applied for a 30 percent investment tax credit from the stimulus package that applies to solar manufacturing in the United States.  Read more here.

QUOTES OF THE MONTH
Reflections of COP 15

"The final stage is here with us. Rather than describing it in optimistic or pessimistic terms, we need to focus on the substantive work before us”
- Yu Qingtai, China's Climate Change Ambassador

"Don't believe that anything gets easier if we postpone things now. This is the time,"
- Denmark's Connie Hedegaard, President of the Copenhagen Climate Conference

"The evidence is now overwhelming that the world would benefit greatly from early action, and that delay would only lead to costs in economic and human terms that would become progressively high"
- Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Failure to avoid the worst effects of climate change could lead to global GDP being up to 20 per cent lower than it otherwise would be – an economic cost greater than the losses caused by two World Wars and the Great Depression.
- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Considering the gravity of the situation we can’t have one part of the world that protects the planet and another that says no without reason.
- French President Nicolas Sarkozy

Our atmosphere can’t tell the difference between emissions from an Asian factory, the exhaust from a North American SUV, or deforestation in South America or Africa.
- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon

Science leaves us with no choice for inaction now.
- Rajendra Pachauri, IPCC Chairman

The naysayers, the folks who would pretend that this is not an issue, they are being marginalised.
- US President Barack Obama.
