Space Energy Progress Report:

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2010 and the January edition of the Space Energy Newsletter.

This month we have some momentous updates for you, beginning with an unprecedented expansion of our Space Energy Operations Management Team.  The first critical transition to Operations Management from our Advisory Board, we are proud to officially announce is Dr. Feng Hsu.

A senior NASA engineer with over 25 years of experience in the aerospace, nuclear and energy industries and major federal institutions, Dr. Hsu is considered to be one of the foremost experts in the world on assurance engineering and risk assessment of complex systems, such as Space Based Solar Power and other frontier space systems.  His impressive track record and ability to oversee technical viability, systems reliability, safety and the risk aspects of our launch systems and space-based solar power technology, make him a natural and first class addition to our team

Whilst at NASA, Dr. Hsu was the leading expert on technical and technology risk assessment on spacecraft & launch vehicle systems and held the position of Head of Integrated Risk Management for Safety and Mission Assurance at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.  He is also an expert on the Space Shuttle systems and spent many years in Houston at the Johnson Space Center, and a former scientist of nuclear energy at world renowned Brookhaven National Laboratory.

He has given many presentations at benchmark events for the Space Industry and renowned International Energy Conferences, and has been summoned numerous times as a keynote speaker advocating Solar Energy and Space Based Solar Power as the global solution to climate change.  Dr. Hsu will continue to be renowned as a respected former NASA expert for many who will strive to follow in his footsteps.

Through his role as visiting professor of UEL and his numerous publications, including author or co-authors of several books, he continues to define the possibilities of humankind in space, generations before his time.  We expect his achievements in his new role as our Sr. VP of Systems Engineering & Risk Management will be an exciting new chapter in his impressive career!

Space Energy Open New Office in Beijing

There is no doubt that China has chosen to take a leading role in the renewable energy sector, a fact that was echoed this month by US President Obama (see world news section below).

As a leading company in the green energy sector and with offices already in Switzerland, the US, Canada and Dubai, we naturally felt it progressive to strengthen our ties and our presence in China.  We are therefore pleased to confirm that after several recent visits and meetings with various Provincial and Central Government Ministers, Space Energy is now proud to officially announce the opening of our new office in the prestigious Beijing Technology Centre.

Chinese Translation of SpaceEnergy.com

In line with the opening of our new office, we have also launched a Chinese translation of our website at SpaceEnergy.com.  We hope this translation will continue to keep our quickly expanding network of partners and supporters in the Chinese community updated on all Space Energy developments as we evolve in 2010.

Space Energy Terrestrial Workshop In Houston

Wasting no time in making his presence known, Dr. Hsu flew in four other members of the Space Energy Terrestrial team for a week long technical workshop in Houston, Texas earlier this month.  It was a great opportunity for them to review all current progress and spend several productive days focusing on the key areas for successful implementation of the first five solar park development projects already underway.

The week was declared a complete success and the entire team came away with a heightened sense of focus, purpose and determination in making sure Space Energy and Space Energy Terrestrial become front runners in this industry.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Members Of Our Space Energy Team Included In Latest Edition Of Space Communications International Journal

The Online Journal of Space Communication has just released a special edition of their online publication which is dedicated to Space Based Solar Power and features a lead paper from our (now) very own Dr. Feng Hsu.  Also included is input from a significant number of our Board of Advisors.

Dr. Hsu’s article, ‘Harnessing the Sun: Embarking on Humanity's Next Giant Leap’, highlights the multiple issues concerning energy from a scientists or engineers perspective.  This paper discusses the prospects for mankind's technological capability and societal will in harnessing solar energy, and focuses on the issues of space based solar power (SBSP) development, and why it is imperative that we must harness the unparalleled power of the sun.  To read Dr. Hsu’s article, please click the link.

Additionally Ralph Nansen, one of our key Technical Advisors, is also featured as guest editor for the edition.  Mr. Nansen who has just recently released the book the ‘Energy Crises: Solution from Space’ is also a world renowned expert on SBSP issues and has vital input into this edition of Solar Power Satellites.  To read Ralph Nansen’s comments click the link, or view his Bio via the Space Energy website.

Mark Wallach, one of our top legal advisors, summarises the legal implications for SBSP in his article also featured in this edition of Space Communications International Journal.  To read this article, please click the link, and to access his Bio via the Space Energy website, please click here.

Also, of course, our co-founder Peter Sage’s inspiring TEDx Talk was featured in this publication, as it continues to make its rounds in the SBSP circles as a definitive benchmark discussion of the plausibility of SBSP.  If you have not yet had the chance to view Peter Sage’s Tedx presentation yet, you can view this via our website or click here.

China Marks Its Presence At World Future Energy Summit In Abu Dhabi

New Legislation Set To Improve China’s Green Energy Technology

While China is making considerable headway in developing innovative green energy solutions, further positive legislation has been passed which requires electric utilities to purchase all the power produced by renewable energy generators.

The amendment also requires the “Chinese government to set up a special fund for renewable energy, scientific research, finance rural clean energy projects, build independent power systems in remote areas and islands and build information networks to exploit renewable energy.” To read the full article please click here.

California To See In The New Year With Over 200 Energy Projects

The California Governor’s Office has announced their intention to see the completion of over 200 energy projects for the sunny state, which is fantastic news for our Terrestrial division which has plans to a develop solar park in California  At the moment California generates 8,000 MW of renewable energy annually, which would increase to 70,000 MW if these projects were developed.

The article states, “for those proposed projects looking for federal stimulus support, 22 could generate power at utility-sized levels of larger than 200 MW, totaling more than 9,000 MW, …Many of the proposed projects are currently moving through a state, federal or local permitting process.”

Solar Contracts Reach $58 Million For Worldwide Energy & Manufacturing

With 2009 being a very productive and fruitful year for the Solar Industry as a whole, Worldwide Energy & Manufacturing are feeling the full effect of the success with $58 Million in solar contract orders as of January this year.

Worldwide Energy and Manufacturing (a U.S.-based solar module technology and China manufacturing company) specializes in solar energy products and are starting the new year with a backlog of orders from 2009.

This is obviously just a minimal taste of what is to come with “the global solar energy market expected to double in the next five years from $36 billion in 2008 to $70 billion in 2013.” To read the full article, please click the link.

Google Jumps On The Energy Bandwagon

Cutting-edge global giant Google is striving to become more energy friendly by investigating carbon-neutral ways of running their massive network of data centres, which output massive amounts of energy every year.  ‘Google Energy’ will be a new entity serving as an energy buying and selling facility that would essentially allow Google to obtain more control over their global operations and expenditures.

Google representative Niki Fenwick told CNET, "Right now, we can't buy affordable, utility-scale, renewable energy in our markets.  We want to buy the highest quality, most affordable renewable energy wherever we can and use the green credits." Please click here to view the full article.
