Space Energy Reports from the World Future Energy Summit

Our Board Member and Senior V.P. of Operations in the Middle East, Fadi Khoury recently had the pleasure of attending the official opening ceremony of the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, where he represented Space Energy and engaged with various high profile figures such as Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Fadi also had the great opportunity to update Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of the Masdar Initiative on developments with Space Energy as well as speaking with The President of Iceland Mr. Olafur Ragnar Grimsson and Switzerland Ambassador Mr. Wolfgang Amadeus Bruelhart, who had requested a meeting personally to discuss the over arching missions and objectives of Space Energy.

The World Future Energy Summit (which was mentioned in our last newsletter), has established itself as the premier platform and showcase for sustainable future energy solutions, and provided the perfect stage for Space Energy to be able to discuss our unique role in championing the solution to our collective goals on an international scale.

INDUSTRY NEWS

International Race for SBSP intensifies

Following Japan’s recent announcement of their intention to be the first country to develop an operational Space Based Solar Power system, (featured in our November newsletter),  and the world’s first power purchase agreement for Space Based Solar Power recently signed in the United Sates, both Europe and Russia are now adding their weight to the international race for SBSP.  Last month Europe’s largest aerospace company, EADS Astrium, announced their intention to develop Space Solar Technology with plans for a low orbit demonstrator underway. (Click to read more)

Meanwhile, the Russian science news agency, Informnauka, claims that leading scientists in Russia are focusing more attention on solar energy including the creation of space solar power plants.  The experts believe that in order to address the issues of a future energy crisis and to keep up with the developed countries, Russia must begin along the path of SBSP development starting ‘today’.  They state that a control system to operate automatic spacecrafts should be developed, as it will allow an integrated antenna field of single satellites to be utilized. (Full article in Russian click here)

With Space Energy positioned at the forefront of what is now clearly an international effort to develop SBSP, we welcome these recent announcements along with the opportunity to develop international collaboration around what is quickly being recognized as a viable, if not inevitable, future energy solution.  We also feel that it should serve as a beacon to other nations that the promise that SBSP offers is very real and countries who are quick to embrace the potential could well play a major part in securing their place in the new energy economy of the 21st century.

NASA’s Future Budget Plans (with commentary by Dr. Feng Hsu)

In another significant industry announcement this month, NASA have released their new budget with the Obama Administration imposing “a more sustainable and affordable approach to spaceflight through the development of transformative technologies and systems.”

The revised budget which includes the termination of the Constellation Spaceflight Programme, which aimed to send Americans to the moon by 2020, has been replaced with a focus on commercial launching capabilities and a healthy cash injection of $6 Billion over 5 years, - This proves to be fantastic news for the private launch industry and ultimately SBSP development.  Dr. Feng Hsu our Senior V.P. of Systems Engineering & Risk Management provides his commentary below.

“As a former NASA expert for many  years,  I like what I have read about the C. Bolden budget speech, and especially like these key words that he repeatedly used in explaining about the president’s bold and new budget plan for NASA, such as the “transformative technology”, “trailblazing” and “game changing” technologies etc. What makes me so proud, is that many of the key points of changes in NASA’s strategic direction and programs as elaborated in Bolden’s speech (or in the President’s budget plan) are extremely in agreement with what I and other visionaries have advocated over the years from within NASA.

The only thing his speech falls short of my expectations was no mention of words about the needed reforms of the space agency itself regarding the way it does business as usual, which was a key reason rooted deeply in the old paradigm of how the space agency has been governed and managed, and so many programs had been repeatedly created and canceled, and therefore wasted billions, since the dawn of the space race.

Meanwhile, this was also one of the critical view points analyzed in my space policy paper (Sustainable Space Exploration & Development – A Unified Strategic Vision) of which I co-authored with Dr. Ken Cox with the inspiration and enthusiastic support from our living space legend Dr. Buzz Aldrin nearly exactly one year ago. (To review that paper, please click this link). http://www.atwg.org/public/UnifiedSpaceVision_Approved_V_2.1.1_March29.pdf If we are not truthful to this issue or to ourselves, we might end up seeing yet another “direction change” for the space agency in our nation’s long space journey down the road!

Nevertheless, we must celebrate and let’s cheer about the bold changes and new vision the administrator and the president have now directed for NASA. We are excited about this budget plan, which is really the beginning of a promising era which allows NASA to play a critical role in supporting and incubating the commercial space industries, especially help the entrepreneurial and innovative space sectors which should greatly add to this nation’s strength and competitiveness in the transformative era of the sustainable global economic development.

We, as an entrepreneurial space business in the forefront of developing “transformative” and “gaming changing” solar energy technologies from the space & terrestrial frontiers, are well positioned to thrive for unprecedented successes in the exciting times ahead. Indeed, I am so glad that I have decided (ahead of the Bolden announcement) to leave NASA and take on more challenges as the Sr. VP of the Space Energy Group and leading the effort to develop the world’s first SBSP flight demo system. I just can’t imagine there are any better jobs out there that are more challenging, more “transformative” and “game changing” than engaged in the development of space-based solar power satellite systems.”

NY Times: China Dominating Global Race to Make Clean Energy

Following last months announcement by President Obama that China was now leading the world in the race to develop clean energy technology, a recent New York Times article now claims China has become the worlds largest manufacturer of wind turbines – another prominent leap above global competitors in the Clean Tech race.  This in conjunction with their clear dominance in the solar technology and manufacture reinforces the desire for China to dominate the renewable energy market.

Not only will ‘green jobs’ be increased dramatically (reaching 1.12 million!) but China also intends for wind, solar and biomass energy to represent at least 8 percent of its electricity generation capacity by 2020.  Coal will still represent two-thirds of China’s capacity in 2020, and nuclear and hydropower most of the rest.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“For the very first time in a long time, humanity is at a tipping point of significant change, change not only in the way we do business, but change in the very way we live our lives.  As new technologies evolve and businesses shift, we are evolving from a species that asks “What do we want?” to “What do WE need.”
